  The first step in achieving ROHS compliance is to understand the restricted substances. ROHS 2.0, the current version of the directive, restricts the use of ten hazardous substances: lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (Cr6+), polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and four phthalates (DEHP, BBP, BBP, DIBP). Manufacturers must ensure that all raw materials, components, and chemicals used in the PCB production process are free from these restricted substances or contain them within the allowable limits.

  The sourcing of materials plays a vital role in ROHS compliance. Manufacturers should establish strict supplier management systems. They need to request material safety data sheets (MSDS) and certificates of compliance from suppliers to verify the chemical composition of the materials. For example, when sourcing copper foils, soldering materials, and laminates, suppliers must provide documentation confirming that these materials meet ROHS requirements. In addition, manufacturers may conduct random sampling and independent testing of incoming materials to ensure the accuracy of the supplier - provided information.

  During the PCB manufacturing process, strict quality control measures are essential. Every stage, from circuit design, material preparation, through - hole drilling, electroplating, and soldering, must be carefully monitored to prevent the introduction of hazardous substances.
